New updates are added at the bottom of this story.
The original story (released October 24, 2022) follows:
Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro have recently arrived as the latest flagship smartphones from Google. Both devices are powered by the new Google Tensor G2 chipset that is a bit more powerful and efficient than the original Tensor.
Overheating in multiple usage scenarios is one of the most reported problems (1, 2) in the previous generation – Google Pixel 6. So, the improvements in this section were expected for the new Pixel 7.
However, some Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro users are reporting similar overheating issues, even with normal use.
Pixel 7 and 7 Pro devices overheating for some users
According to several reports, Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro get noticeably hot in various situations. Affected users say that overheating can even make holding the smartphone uncomfortable.
Has anyone returned a Pixel 7 due to heating issues? 256gb?
I got my pixel 7 about a week ago and I love this phone except for the overheating issue. The first day I was setting up the phone the phone got hot but that is to be expected as everyone says.
So I tried it for a week with my general use. It’s mostly cold while idle, but after a few minutes of use it gets warm again.
Pixel 7 Pro very hot / overheating: your experiences?
I was already noticing that the Pixel was getting uncomfortably warm. When I touched the camera’s metal nub, it was too hot to touch for more than a second.
Camera-related apps seem to be particularly affected
It seems that most of the cases of overheating while using Google Pixel 7 and 7 Pro are related to the camera.
There are multiple reports that the problem occurs when taking photos, recording videos, making video calls or simply opening the Camera app.
Pixel 7 Pro overheating
My brand new (obviously) Pixel 7 Pro is heating up within seconds of opening the camera and while browsing the internet on mobile data.
I am having overheating issues while using video call on my pixel 7 pro. So scare for this temperature 45*C during video call. My old pixel 4xl hasn’t had any problems so far, still works fine.
However, that doesn’t mean that heavy use is needed to generate overheating. There are also reports that the Google Pixel 7 series gets hot during normal to light use.
My Pixel 7 gets hot in normal use.
I received my pixel 7 two days ago. Rest is great but it only faces an overheating issue during normal use. The phone goes up to 43 degrees Celsius while using social media apps like Reddit, Facebook or Instagram.
There is still no official acknowledgment of this issue by the Google team. But we will follow up and update this story as events unfold.
